Ready to use Semen Extender

Background:
Presently, egg yolk is being used for preparation of semen extender. There are some limitations of egg yolk based semen extender like wide variability of egg yolk composition (Forouzanfar et al., 2010), risk of microbial contamination (Aires et al., 2003), presence of high-density lipoproteins (Pace and Graham, 1974) and steroids hormones (Lipar et al., 1999). Therefore, the demand for replacement of egg yolk in freezing extenders has increased in recent years. Technology Details To solve the above stated problem, we extracted active ingredient of egg yolk that has not having the unwanted substance mentioned above. Further we added some antioxidants and compared with raw egg yolk based extender and found that our customized extender showed better performance in terms of sperm motility and freezability over egg yolk based extender. Thereafter, we evaluated keeping quality of the extender and found no significant difference in its performance up to eight months. It is the first ready to use indigenous semen extender for buffalo semen cryopreservation.
